The 1 inch installation clearance for the top listed in the specifications on our product detail page for the refrigerator that ensures that you have enough space around the refrigerator for airflow is a minimum recommendation. The more airflow you have around the refrigerator, the better so a cutout of 72 1/4" is not necessarily wrong. Refrigerator are heat exchange units that need space to dissipate the heat they generate.
