“I plan to use this DVD player for recording CDs to USB drive. I seem to remember reading that there is a restriction on the number of file names that will be generated in the recorded folder. Maybe 600 files? I'm not talking about memory size.”

Correct. The Maximum Files/Folder: Less than 600 (total number of files and folders).
