• Yes you can do both, for example, heat something in the microwave and time something else cooking on the stove.

• The time can be started before cooking is started, and the timer will function "behind" the cooing, and will either signal completion during cooking or reappear at the end of cooking, depending on the degree of overlap. The one limitation is that i t is not possible to program the timer while cooking is taking place.
