It can be installed much closer to the wall if one forgoes the black metal spacer that's installed at installation, however I'm sure it's there to provide a bit of air gap for the heat, downdraft vents, or something. I kept mine on and chose to flip one of those bi-fold corner cabinet doors so it would open..
