It does play your text messages from all the programs I currently use when I receive them regardless of what I am currently doing on the phone minus being on a call. I do not know if you are able to respond or not though? Most likely you can once you activate speech to text within the application. Wouldn't recommend using the speech to text option if that is what you are wanting to do while driving.
