It is not necessary as the case completely covers the phone. When I returned my corporate phone when I upgraded, it was in pristine condition!

No. The one Built into case is good enough. I am an electrician and my phones go through heck and never had a problem. Have had life proof on my last 3 iPhones and the looked like new when I upgraded.

The screen on the LifeProof is robust; but if you are prone to scratches and cracked screens; then it would not hurt to add a Zagg Glass screen protector to help safe guard your screen. See link below:
