They need to be connected. The only other way around it is if you bought 3 separate strips with power sources.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You would have to purchase a separate controller/power supply in order to have them in different spots in the room. The LED strips have 4 pins that connect to the controller or connect to another strip to extend the length.

In theory, if you were to purchase a second or even third power supply then they should work individually. However, i personally have not tested whether or not the app would identify them as three individual lights if you were to do so. It’s worth trying if this specific setup will complete your mental blueprint for your room.

The ability to separate the individual 1m long pieces and not lose the continuity of the lighting.
