To get the best out of your Velop (I have 5 nodes) you should go from your cable modem straight to the master node. Then use the other port to go to feed the switch. If you can, connect the other members of the mesh also to that switch. This way the mesh uses Wifi to talk to your devices, but the hard wire to communicate to the master node and internet. In my case I have 3 out of 5 wired like that.

I have the incoming cable for my internet going into my modem then the Cat5 cable going into the Ethernet switch box. Then one cable into my gateway node for the mesh system. Since my old router was tucked away in a closet and the node is now in my living room my speeds went from 15-20mb to 100-115mb. I have 5 laptops plugged in and have no lag

It is best to plug the switch in between the nodes (wired backhaul) and plug the Velop's Parent node directly to the main modem.
