It should not be. It overheating can cause issues. Ensure that it is not on top of another electronic device that may be generating heat and that there is open space around the bottom of the device (around the legs) so that air is able to flow easily.

Just make sure you turn the device off once per month or so, and vacuum the exhaust ports to remove build up. This will help keep the heat down, and will improve the life-span of your product.

I don't know what would happen if I didn't have the fan on it. I've had it there from the first day I bought when I noticed the high temperature.
