“Do the 3 nodes "piggyback" off each other or do the child nodes only use the parent node for signal? Meaning should the parent node be in the middle of the 2 child nodes or does it matter?”

Hi there. The child nodes can communicate with each other and pass the signal along the chain back to the main (parent) node. If the parent node is centrally located, it might reduce the number of hops and improve overall network performance.
