if you're talking about the 'rental' ripoff many ISP's do, you can have that fee removed. my new ISP comes to the house on fiber with a single port modem [only, no WiFi transmitter] as the basic installation. they offered the 'complete' package which has equipment rental but buying this saved me from needing to do that.
