I have a modem/router combo from my provider. Do I pitch that, buy a separate modem and then this system, or do/can I add this to my current setup? null

You can add it. The app will make you choose which way you want to go. Personally, I went with a cheap modem and I added this devise and was still faster thank the actual wifi/modem combo

You can add the Velop to your router modem.

I had the same issue.... FiOs techs were not so helpful... I just ended up plugging the ethernet line from the Velop device into the FiOs router and now I have complete coverage in the house... was hoping to lose the rental of the FiOs router and will revisit the issue when I get more time. I feel confident another Verizon analyst can help me return the $15 per month weakling FiOs router.

Depends you would honestly be better served by buying a modem and router so you no longer have to rent but a lot of dsl providers need isp provided equipment like mine does so i put my provided modem in bridge mode but when i had cable i just purchased saves you in the long run.
