that depends. If you already have a router and it can go into bridge mode, then you can put your node elsewhere in the house wirelessly and extend your coverage. your functionality mileage will vary in this case along with a bit of instructional web searching to get this working. If you don't have a router then yes, it will have to remain hardwired in order to work.
