Are these all just extending antennas? or does one of them act as the router to connect into the modem associated to the ISP? null

You can connect any one of them into your modem. With the three nodes I am getting coverage through over 4500 square feet. Also you can run a non wifi device by running a lan cable from one of the nodes to your device. Great for where my desktop is located.

Hi. One of the nodes should be wired to the modem and act as your parent/main node. The other nodes can be connected either wireless or wired which act as the child nodes to extend the coverage and create a mesh network.

All three were the same. I connected one to the mode with the cable and the other two connected automatically.

Any of the nodes can and will act as your main router, while the remaining nodes will extend the network with full strength within range. It all just depends on which one you pull out of the box and set up with the app first! You can then add more nodes as you see fit.
