“does this keyboard work when detached? I want to be able to have my iPad separate from my keyboard when I type-- the pictures only show people typing when it is attached to the iPad, so I can't tell if it only works when attached. thanks!”

This only works when connected to you Ipad. It uses the smart connector to work. You would have to purchase a bluetooth keyboard if you wanted them separate.

The keyboard needs to be connected in order to use it's functionality. Perhaps a K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard would be another option? 10m range, connects to 3 devices via bluetooth.
