That small area is designed to hold a Logi Bolt receiver. While the Lift for Mac primarily uses Bluetooth, it can also connect via a Logi Bolt receiver for a more stable connection. This receiver isn't included in the box, but if you purchase one, you can store it in that compartment for safekeeping when not in use, or when you choose to use the receiver instead of Bluetooth.
