“the mouse connected immediately, but not the keyboard. When trying to connect the keyboard I get a message to tap the key to the left of the right side shift key to id the keyboard, but when I do this it says it can't find a keyboard. What's going on?”

Be sure the dongle is fully installed and the batteries in the keyboard are connected properly. (My came with a battery protector strip to keep the batteries from discharging). I needed an adapter (female USB to USB C) to use with my Macbook Pro, but have had no problem with it identifying the keyboard.
