You are correct. There is no visual indicator for NumLock. I'd prefer a light myself but am willing to accept this minor deficiency for the other functionality. If you're unsure, the safest way is to press the "5" key on the number pad since that has no other non-number functions. (Other keys will scroll you up or down or move your cursor if not in Number Lock.) If you get a 5, you're good to go. If not, press NumLock and retest.
