“Do the keycaps have molded in characters, or are they printed on (in which case they will eventually wear off)”

The letters are not printed on. This keyboard is backlit so the light is shining through the keys lighting up the letters on the keys.

Molded in, they're translucent so the backlighting can show through the characters (see images).

They are cut out to allow the backlight to illuminate through the keys.

It has illuminated keys where the light shines through the characters, so I don't believe they are printed on.

Yes, the caps have a level of transparency for the letters. The keyboard is lit, and the light shines through the letters.
