it's bluetooth! you can also do the USB plug-in through a USB-to-USB-C adaptor. my new macbook definitely doesn't have regular USB drives anymore, which is sad. but the "plug" on the remote is USB. so you'll need the adapter; or to use it bluetooth. hope this helps!
