• no all the sound is powered by the unit and sub-woofer.

• NO! It is self powered and will hook up to a cell phone, MP3 player or anything that has the same type of connector. It's not extremely loud but will fill a garage or basement with music. I love my system. Great clarity and bass. The only down fall(and a very minor one) is the bass is preset and is not adjustable. There are some songs or videos that the bass is louder than others. My advice to everyone looking into this system is: BUY IT !!!!!!
