That's a good question. With the redevelopment of the iPad over the past year, Apple is changing this feature to become a blue-tooth connection, not a hardware connection. It's been their goal for some time to get rid of wires, just like on their smartphones. If this model you have is older, you can plug in the device to the top of the iPad and it would work. All you'll get is sound coming out, but no control like on a normal laptop or tower. You'll need a regular computer to gain control over sound quality and style. Hope that helps.
