I've seen a lot of youtube videos on this matter and a lot of the major youtube apple users are saying you should save money and connect a large external HDD or SSD. If you use it for time machine, make sure the files you want are on the time machine first before deleting from the mac internal SSD. Otherwise you could use one external drive for time machine and one for main machine use.
