It might work for your needs. The default tripod head won't work, but it comes with a rectangular plate similar to the Arca-Swiss quick release plates. That should work for the cell phone. The other important thing to note, is that this tripod has a "pistol grip," not a long handle grip. The pistol grip is fine as long as you don't intend to do a lot of pan and scan filming (i.e. trying to use the tripod to steady the phone while filming the birds flights across the yard).
