• The previous response to your question is correct. The Marantz AV7706 is compatible with 2.1/3.1/4.1/5.1/all the way up to 11.2. A separate amp is required. Feel free to contact Marantz customer support for further assistance. 1-800-654-6633

• Yes, this will be backwards compatible with 7.1, 5.1, 2.1 etc. Just note that you will still need a separate amplifier to power your speakers.
