Because there is no battery. Needs to always be connected to AC power via power cord.

Hi Dean, thanks for your question. The Acton III is not a battery powered speaker, it has to be plugged in to a power source to function. If you are looking for a portable speaker, you will want to look at the Tufton, Middleton, Kilburn II, Emberton II or the Willen.
