Hi Joan, if the load is out of balance, we have added some "leveling fluid" to the tub that will self adjust and balance the load. If you are washing heavy rugs or similar items you may have to assist if the load gets far out of balance. Normal loads will go out of balance much less often since the leveling fluid is always working to keep the load spinning.
