When I bought the machine the salesman said it was a direct drive - as are most washers now. I bought it because my previous Kenmore washers lasted for over 20 years! But due to the Sears bankrupsy I worried about replacement parts and extended warenttee being honored. After research I found ALL. Kenmore washers were made by whirlpool who slso now own Maytag ALSO now made in the USA since 2006. This machine has a 10 year warrentee and I bought the inexpensive Best Buy additional iverage. They matched Cosco prices. This machine is huge inside - HUGE! Yet still sits in my TINY TINY wash room. This 4.3 capacity washes great. " "NOTE TO SELF"...read the ownersmanual online first to see if it meets your needs ESPECIALLY the notation on WIERD NOISES. The washer starts stops pauses and creeks (like an old wooden ship) but not loudly like my old washer on agitation heavy cycle. Its different but I do like it. I can wash twice the number of FRC chemical plant shirts and pants per load than my kenmore 3.7 capacity. the smaller agitator and 4.3 size made a big difference. Hope it works for you
