“I am using the 30 day trial pre-installed LiveSafe McAfee program on my Dell Laptop (with Win 10). If I purchase McAfee Total Protection, will I have to install the new version or will I just be able to enter the new act code for the 1 yr sub?”

You will have to uninstall it and install again with new activation code . It’s easy as the McAfee will guide you the process during new installation.

The installation process will offer to do that for you, or you can do it yourself. You don't need to cancel anything as it was a trial and you didn't sign up for it.
