• you can only record from the over the air built in tuner to a thumb drive or hard drive via usb port

• I haven't tried what you're suggesting. However, I have only been able to attach an external hard-drive and record. Tried USB thumb drives, and they didn't work. Even if they were recognized, the system would drop them later. Becoming unavailable. The attached hard drive is a spinning 1TB drive. No problems. I can then take that hard drive and import the files onto my computer. Good luck
