This is a WiFi system and the best I have owned so far. In my case the Eero starter pack replaced an existing system. We ended up with a marked increase in download speeds and much better reliability. The business about a monthly charge only refers to an additional service that you can obtain from this company, but it is not necessary for the operation of these units.

The simple answer is you will still need to pay for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in order to have access to the Internet. The eero connects to the ISP’s equipment to provide a mesh network of WiFi.

It is a WiFi router, it just uses two units that create a mesh WiFi. You don't have to pay anything for normal WiFi functionality. I think they have some additional protection options you can pay for. Just to be clear, not paying anything still gets you a fully functional router.

Yes it is a wi-fi system. You plug it into the back of your modem. It is very easy to set up. The Wi-Fi extender that is included all you have to do is plug it into an electrical outlet and it syncs automatically. I am so happy I purchased mine.
