Some applications may require a subscription, but the device and many apps do not. Many of the most immersive applications like the workouts and music/rythm based games need a subscription to continue covering licensing fees and updated content so they do not get stale. There is continually new content from google, youtube, meta, and other developers that do not though to keep the device and its platform fresh.
