• Metroid can crawl. Metroid chooses not to crawl. The real question is how far can Metroid crawl if Metroid chose to crawl.

• Because In the original NES title Metroid game the developers said it would be to hard to animate Samus crawling so they gaver her the morph ball instead.

• Samus actually can/has crawled before. There's a section in Metroid Zero Mission - it is potential spoilers for the gameplay section, but it's at the end of the game if you look up a walkthrough on Youtube.
