“My son currently has a 1 year subscription to Office 365 (when I purchased his laptop last year), and it's ready for renewal. If I purchase the Office 365 (up to 5 users) will this work for his renewal and for a new laptop I am purchasing now?”

Yes it will. When you son logs to MS Office / installing it on computer then he would have to use your information since it is under you. Or you would have to install it for him with the username and password that you have associated with the registration. Its pretty much do once and thats it.

To share it with YOUR new laptop, he will have to "share" (in the account settings) his subscription with you (using your email address). Then once you have installed the apps on your laptop, you would sign in with that / your account, and the service will recognize that he has shared one of his licenses with you.
