If you purchased the Geek Squad protection plan, you can file a claim in-store. If fulfilled, you will get a gift card with the amount you paid for the controller, plus applicable sales tax.

If the warranty deems that they will exchange it for you then usually you can ask for store credit which will amount to the current price of the elite 1 controller. You can do what you want with your store credit at that point.
