Either way. It is depends on your active use time. If there is no movement of the mouse it will automatically shut off. If you wish to turn it off yourself you can do that also.

I had to turn it off manually It was a hassle to remember to do that. Battery would run down over night.

It's supposed to go to sleep after 5 min O believe. But I turn mine off every time. The power button is very solid and never had a problem. It's well built.
