As long as you bought the card during the free promotion period you should get the free code by e-mail. I bought a physical card online picked it up at the store and had my code e-mailed in less than 24 hours. I bought a digital card for my other son on christmas eve and got both the digital version and the free code in less than 30 minutes.

If you sign up for the promotion FIRST, you can then redeem the physical card afterward, for 6 months total.

I did not recieve 3 months free when I bought my physical card from Best Buy. Microsoft is offering 3 months for $1.00 right now furing 12/19, with a catch it must be first time signing up.
