There is also the bedrock edition, available on many devices: PC, PS4, XBOX ONE, Android...which has cross play so you can play with people using a different platform. The bedrock gets updated like java, but only manages to keep up at times. YouTube may best explain the differences best but depending on how you play the game will really determine what version you want. Bedrock may get you more players, but java will get you the best players.

However, there are updates & DLC for each platform that expand the game. Either way, you need the base game in order to play.
