Hello Andy, The mount locks into place using the tightening knobs rather than a separate latch mechanism. There are top and side knobs on the arm assembly joints. Once you adjust the TV to your desired angle, you fully tighten these knobs using the included 5mm Allen key to lock the elbows in place. The manual strictly notes to never just hand-tighten the knobs. Because it locks via these adjustable tightening joints, you can absolutely secure the TV at a slight angle instead of forcing it to sit completely flat against the wall. Please note that for safety while your vehicle is in motion, we recommend keeping the arms fully collapsed to the wall whenever possible to reduce the transportation forces applied to the mount.
