I see that the ssd drives have three different "notch" types, two have one notch, on opposite sides, the third has two notches. any idea what the second m.2 slot needs? null

it will support all but the fastest is the NVME using pcie - 1 notch can reach speeds up 3200 mb/s the 2 notch typical m.2 can only support around 500mbs.

Either of those versions will work with this laptop. The first version with three notches is SATA-based, and the two notch version is NVMe-Based. NVMe drives use PCIe which results in much faster transfer speeds!
