I am using a 7th generation i5 chip. The real necessity is a PCI-E card slot. Have to go to the instruction book for your computer. Chips do enter into it because AMD processors have some gaming features that are exclusive to AMD and some cards won't interchange fully, although they might work. I just use my card for the multiple monitor feature. My fancy Asus board had only one monitor output.
