“The controller for the lights seems to be defective and not working(the power button doesn't respond at all and so I can't soft or hard reset the device) .... I've been trouble shooting for hours and nothing works. any suggestions?”

If you are in warranty, they will send you a replacement controller. If you are outside of warranty, you will need to pay $30 + $10 shipping for a replacement controller. They're a pretty common failure point, so be prepared to be paying $40/year if you want to keep your lights working after the warranty period.
