I’m assuming you’re referring to NBA 2K21 Next Gen. The answer is yes, it is compatible with the Series X, infact, it is optimized for the console. Also, don’t throw away your sons old games just yet (if he played on the Xbox One before) , as the Xbox Series X is fully backwards compatible (meaning you can still play games from previous generations and it will run just fine).

The disc won’t work with Xbox S, because it’s all digital. So if you did get the disc you can see if they will exchange it

This is the physical copy, so you need to exchange for the digital copy to get a code for use on the XBOX Series S. Two options have been loaded into my answer. Good luck, and happy gaming for your son.

Series X only plays digital games, meaning this is the “disc” version that requires a disc player which only the Series X has.

Buy the digital version from the Microsoft store or make sure to buy the “DIGITAL@ version of this game on BestBuy which includes the code.
