“Hello, My home is 1,400 square feet. Can I, therefore, just buy the router? or do I need a point as well? With just the router in one room (and no point), will I have connectivity in rooms at the opposite end of my home? Thanks.”

Technically that should be fine but it depends on A LOT of factors. I’d recommend (and have recommended to many people) getting the 3 pack. I have a 1700 square foot home and I’m glad I bought the 3 pack because otherwise it wouldn’t have done anything for me.
