“Can an 8-port ethernet switch be placed between the Nest wifi mesh system router and the modem ( Motorola E31U2V1 in my case ) One port would run the Nest Wifi system and the remaining ports are hard wired ( ethernet ) through-out the house”

We recommend that you put your Nest Wifi between your modem and switch instead. You can plug the switch into the LAN port of the Nest Wifi Router to avoid connection issues.

Probably not unless your modem integrates the function of a router so that you can rewire and reconfigure the wireless router to set it up as access point
