Yes you do need a router to use WiFi. This is only a cable modem, which means it will take the signal from the cable coming into it and put it on the single LAN port coming out of it. You need to plug a LAN cable in this and into a router to convert the LAN signal into a WiFi signal. Best Buy has some routers on very good sale now, I just ordered the Belkin F9K1113-BBY that is on clearance sale to replace an old Verizon router.

Yes, this will just plug into your Coaxial cable plug. You will need a router to connect to this in order to get wireless internet.
