In my experience the NETGEAR CM600 will automatically assign 192.168.1.1 to whatever device is plugged in to its LAN port. As to why someone would want to change this, one reason would be because you want to set up a VPN server so you can remote back to your home network while you're away. In this case the IP address ranges at both locations must be different so they don't conflict. Considering the typical home network is 192.168.1.x, they would conflict. To the other poster who responded: just because your limited knowledge of networking doesn't allow you to understand nerdish2's question, doesn't mean it is a bad question.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The cable modem does not assign any IP addresses. That is the responsibility of the router that it's connected to. The cable modem transforms cable signals into Ethernet which talks to the router. You should be able to setup the router to generate IP addresses 10.0.0.x with a mask 255.255.255.0
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No, I don’t know why you would want to.
