This I strictly a modem and has no WiFi capability. You will need to purchase a separate Router/WiFi unit to connect a network. I prefer separate WiFi & Modem until (better performance). The type of router should not matter in terms on compatibility, it does its own thing. I am using on a newer router with 3 channel (2.4Ghz and 2ea - 5Ghz) and it works great. JUST MAKE SURE THE MODEL OF THE MODEM IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOU INTERNET PROVIDER.

Your speed is limited by your modem, not the router, so you may be paying for higher speeds than your N300 can give you. The modem is the point of entry and exit for your up/download speed, so its max is your top speed no matter how good a WiFi router you have. That said, the n300 is rated for 300Mbps over 2.4 GHz, which is higher than most residential service plans (I have Comcast and do not get over 100Mbps in my area). So unless you’re paying for super high speeds, you should be fine with your current modem as long as your devices can use the 2.4 band (computers, phones, tablets, etc).
