Yes, that should work just fine. You'll know it's working by looking at the activity LED's next to the switch ports. They should start flickering showing network traffic.

Yes, this will take the single port on a modem or router and make it work with multiple devices

So I think it should work fine....I have... a Modem going into the unit.... Then I have a wi-fi hub, a PS4 and a MAC all running out if it no problem with I believe one port to spare (its not in front me right now) Its extremely reliable...and very easy to setup

Yes, you should be able to. I run my SmartThings hub, orbi, and Phillips Hue through it
