“I'm going to use this with my new xfi modem from xfinity since the new modem doesn't have the needed ports my old xfinity modem had but will give me more speed. Can I use an old cat5 cable to go from the modem to the Netgear switch or do I need Cat7 ?”

A bit overdue but a Cat5E or better is recommended since this switch supports gigabit speeds to get the maximum performance.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If it's a 100 Mb connection, CAT 5 is fine. If it's a gigabit connection, you might be able to get away with CAT 5 if it's a really short run. CAT 5e or CAT 6 is best for longer runs. CAT 7 is total overkill in this case.

It really depends on your network cards. If your fine with your existing cables, just use them. I recommend getting new ones. Less problems in the future.

If I’m not mistaken, unless you have a really old cat 5, it should be a cat 5e and that cable should transmit up to 1000mbps. So unless you have a modem and internet connection that’s past 1000mbps, you should be good. But it’s always a good idea to think about the future too.
